I wanted a simple, classic solitaire, not round. Hubby picked out an oval. I've always been happy with it--33 years now. I can add stack type rings on either side and I've had 2 different types of wrap rings that wrap around my diamond to give it a different look. Most of the time I wear it just as it is, and between 2 plain bands--one is my wedding ring and one was my first anniversary gift. I''ve found it to be very versatile, and I don't have to worry about losing any pave diamonds.

As I am currently in the US, I was wondering whether diamond solitaires are better value here or in the UK (in general, not just taking exchange rate into account)? I am specifically looking for white gold, princess cut up to half a carat.

Is there a comparison shopping site for UK diamond retailers? If so, the easiest way to decide this would be to plug similar specifications into the UK site and http://www.diamondpriceguru.com/ or a similar US diamond search engine. It checks about 10 different US-based retailers, including some I've seen in other answers, like Amazon.com and Mondera and Blue Nile. So, you tell it what you want, even give it a range of clarity grades, color grades, etc., and it shows you all the matches and each retailer's price for it. It's very handy. I just don't know of one specific to UK retailers. One note, the search engines focus on loose diamonds because the prices are better if you buy the diamond and setting apart and have them combined. Pre-set rings carry more of a markup since the retailer knows the shopper won't pull it apart to inspect the diamond grade. I plugged in "princess cut, up to .5 carat" and and 8,463 diamonds were found. You can narrow it down, of course. I narrowed it to color grades J and higher, with clarity grades VVS2 and higher and it found 2,470 matches. Anyway, it's simple to play around with these online tools, and they do the work for you.Happy hunting!

Ok so Im going through the process of picking a ring out and most stores Ive been too tell me solitaires aren't popular anymore and that the "In" thing is diamond rings with the lady's birthstone to compliment it. Also these swirly looking designs are in style, sorry but I don't remember what they are actually called. Any advice, thoughts or comments would be great.

No the solitaire engagement ring is a timeless classic. If you think you intended will like it go for it. My husband took me to pick the ring and I chose a white gold diamond solitaire. Simple and beautiful. But that's really up to what you feel your girlfriend will like. Just remember she has to wear it for the rest of her life so you can't just give in to a fleeting fashion that may disappear by next year. Just pick something you know is her style.

Question : My wedding is in 3 weeks. I have a solitaire diamond ring, maybe somebody can help me?
I need to raise money for my wedding and this is the only way I can think of without borrowing or loaning money. I actually have two rings, one is a gold solitaire engagement ring and the other one is a 3-stone diamong ring. The solitaire ring looks new as I haven't used it too long. well,,, the Diamond prices depends on 3 aspects:the cut,,the purity(clarity) and the color,,,, it is impossible to determine the price without knowing those three aspects + of course the weight of the single stone in crates,,,,then the Diamond with an INTERNATIONAL certificate has better resell price than the one without (most likely the one without is blood diamond -long story)... most the stones with certificate can be sold back to the company which issues the certificates,, Not less than the buying price (Gazan as an example : international diamond trader/certificate issuer..)------------------Dear, I have been living in Guinea?south Africa, then Belgium and Holland,,the first ones are the biggest producers of diamond,, the seconds are big in trading them,, Not showing up! but I do can with some limits know about diamonds,, There is one more aspect decide the price of course,,,which is the Crown depth to the pavilion depth,,(as the crown is the part shown outside the ring,,if it is bigger of course that mean that the stone is (more expensive)(beside the crown angle as well),,, anyway with suitable (loupe ) I can see the color, the cut easy,, as for clarity,,it is very difficult to know the difference between the perfect stone (F or the IF ) and the Vvs1 (no flawless. or very very small imperfiction)...The best always to look for the certificateHere is a web page to you and others to see how diamonds are evaluated,,,Now last year In Belgium( and that is almost in all the world) one carat stone,,, colorless, VVs1 brilliant round cut,,, was in between 4000/3500 euroBy attention, the fact that the one carat is X (le) does not means that 1/2 is 1/2X,,, it does not work that wayas the bigger the diamond is the rare it is,,, so if the 1/2 carat =x le,, that may mean the one carat is 3/or 4 X,,,but again it depends on lots of aspects as I mentioned aboveHere is a very useful chart,,, this one is in all diamond traders framed on their tables,, for client to read,,(at least abroad)http://www.jewelbasket.com/aboutdiamonds.html

I really love the solitaire princess cut diamond rings (white gold and possibly one ct.) but when I get married I need a band to go along with it....would a band with diamonds all around it look alright? Or would it be better to go with a plain white gold band?thanks :)
