to me - simple is more romantic. maybe you could take her for a walk. or have a picnic set up under the stars somewhere and dance with her. or, if it's applicable...take her to the place you first met or had your first date...kiss...something that's memorable and special to the two of you. and just tell her how you feel about her. =)

There are no small differences that you are missing. It is all about the marketing of the rings. And your choice of them is according to what is in your pocket and your bank account. My now Fiance gave me a promise ring after my first year at college. We met in high school and he stayed home and worked. He didn't to the college thing. anyways, we are engaged to be married in 2 weeks and I still wear my promise ring. I just wear it on my right hand now. I wore it on my left hand until I got my engagement ring. I think they are very special when you are ready for a long term relationship, but not yet ready to be engaged.
