Questions & Answers
Question : Does titanium look like palladium?
My engagement ring is going to be palladium, but we want our bands to possibly be titanium due to our budget. Will the titanium band match my palladium ring? I want both to have a polished finish. Can anyone show me photos?here's the link to my 'palladium' engagement ring http://engagementring.theprestigediamondcollection.com/productdetails.aspx?ProductId=ZE0000024123 And here's the possible 'titanium' wedding band we will have. http://www.titaniumconcepts.com/omnipresent.htmwill those metals match or clash?

Answer:
The casting and polishing of the metals will have a great impact on the way they look. Generally speaking the Palladium will be slightly whiter and the Titanium have slightly more luster. No photograph will do justice to the looks of the metals. Go to a large jewelry store and ask to look at Palladium and Titanium rings. Look at these next to one another. The Palladium and Titanium will also look different as they age. Palladium will get a patina over time, but it can be polished to avoid this. The difference in hardness between the two metals might be a problem. The Palladium will have a Mohr's hardness of about 4.75 while the Titanium's hardness will be very close to 6.0. It is possible for the edge of the Titanium ring to scratch the Palladium.

Question : I found a polished gold bangle with an unusual mark inside. It looks like an 'H' but is a square with two dots?
The bangle is a smooth polished finish, inside is where I found the mark, I have been told by three different ppl that it is a real gold piece of jewelry. A friend has two rings, one yellow gold, one white with this mark inside them. But they also have the karat stamp also.Does anyone know what this mark is? I tried wording my search in numerous different ways and still haven't gotten a hit on this mark!! Thank you very much!

I have a sterling silver ring I put in a felt pouch for traveling, when I took it out, it had a very thick dull finish on it. I purchased the polishing cloths and used the paste but it is not completely removing it, can anyone recommend anything to help? :(

You can also try toothpaste or some of the cleaning solution that you submerge your jewelry into and let it soak for a few minutes.

is it possible to convert a high polish ring into a matte finish?

Take your ring to a reputable jeweler and see if they can matte the finish by "brushing" the finish. They have the right tools and can advise whether it would be possible with your ring.

Question : how can I get rid of water spots on marble tile?
We used marble tile for our kitchen counter top/ after having glasses and wine bottles sitting on it for several hours we now have discolored spots and rings. The spots are under the finish and no amount of polishing etc. gets rid of them. Is there any way to treat them? Do we need to put a sealer on the tile?

Answer:
I have a marble floor (which had been sealed, too) in an ensuite, and it has been nothing but a problem. Twice now I have had to get professionals in to sand and repolish the water spots. Had I known this floor would be so touchy, I never would have done it. I have since been told that granite would have been the thing to use, and marble should be reserved for walls. This is what the professionals told me about removing water spots on marble: make a paste of a lightly gritty substance, such as baking soda, and LIGHTLY go over the water spot. Be careful, you don't want to make it worse. Then use a polish over it (in my case it was Pledge furniture polish, maybe you have something a bit better for a countertop). Thats it. It should lessen the spot, but probably won't remove it entirely. Also, I was told to regularly Pledge my marble floor to prevent future water spots. Hope this helps.

Question : I have an old engagement ring I would like to trade-in for a new one, any advice?
I can't go back to the old jeweler for the trade-in, will another jeweler give me a good amount if I buy a new ring as well. Any recommendations of how to get the most money? How much do you think I can get for the trade in, the appraisal is as follows: One ladies 14karat yellow gold and solitaire engagement ring, modern cast, die struck and assembled construction, high polish finish. This ring consists of a 2.5 mm wide, flat shank that tapers to 3.2 mm at the top where there is l round brilliant cut diamond, set in a 14karat white gold, 4 prong, tiffany style head, measuring 7.31 x 7.36x 4.40mm (depth was visually estimated due to mounting), weighing 1.44 carats by formula, Color J-K, Clarity I1. This ring is in good condition and weighs 2.56 dwt. value $6,200.

Answer:
If you like the size of the stone have it re-set, it really doesn't cost much at all, a good jeweler (not a chain) will even give you credit for the metal. We had my grandmothers diamond used in my ring and with the custom design and additional stones it was very reasonable.Ask around, otherwise the professional appraisal and Ebay auction might be your best bet.
