Question : Is wheat germ good for you?
Years ago nutritionists used to say that wheat germ was good for you. Nowadays, you don't hear much about it. Does anyone know the answer? Also, in the supermarkets they have jars of Kretchmer's wheat germ, and it says to refrigerate after opening. However, in Whole Foods, a health oriented chain market, they have the wheat germ in bulk, and not refrigerated. Is this ok?

Indeed, wheat germ used to get some "press," but those days seem to have passed. Wheat germ is definitely good for you. The Web site, the World's Healthiest Foods, has a nice blurb on it, which I share verbatim here:----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------A "Germ" that Promotes HealthWheat bran is not the only star when it comes to the health benefits of wheat; wheat germ definitely deserves its "health food" reputation. The germ is the vitamin and mineral rich embryo of the wheat kernel that is removed during the refining of whole wheat grains to white flour. Packed with important B vitamins, such as folate, thiamin, and vitamin B6, and the minerals zinc, magnesium, and manganese, wheat germ is a top-notch food that can be easily incorporated into casseroles, muffins, and pancakes or sprinkled over cereal or yogurt. The wheat germ also has a high oil content, and subsequently a high amount of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the oil in the wheat germ from quickly becoming rancid. Vitamin E functions in a similar manner as a fat-soluble antioxidant in the human body where it helps protect fat-containing substances including cell membranes, brain cells, and fatty molecules such as cholesterol from damge by free radicals. I used to work for fridays, applebee's and even chili's Never had a seen it on tap or even in the bottle at big chain places, Generally they dont tend to carry stuff like that, one because its hard to sell, and 2 cost more to buy even in bulk. Big chain places like to buy in massive multi store quanities and even if one store sells that beer well, odds are the 4-5 others in the region won't therefore it becomes a waste of money, and cannot be aquired cheap enough to make it worth doing!

The cows take up space, they need to be fed (so energy is being used) and they lose energy through growth, excretion, movement, respiration etc.Wheat can be produced in a small area and they don't use up much energy. They are the first trophic level, whereas cows are up higher, and energy lessens as you go up food chains.

Actually, Round Table Pizza will be rolling out their whole wheat crust in the next couple weeks or so. It helps if you live west of the Rockies since that's where almost all the restaurants are located.

Question : Where can I buy a whole wheat baguette?
I'm looking for a 18 inch, 8 oz whole wheat baguette, but really, any whole wheat baguette or even french bread would be great. I've been to FoodMaxx and Safeway, but no luck. Does anyone know of any stores around Hayward/San Leandro, California, or any chain stores that sell something like it? Please and thank you... otherwise I'll have to make it myself. :/

What you have described is not a baguette but a baton, a baguette is 24" to 36" long, the dough is determined by law in France so if you make it from whole wheat it is no longer a baguette. Boring isn't it? However, the baguette made in the USA is made with whole wheat, as to your problem where to buy it, I cannot help except to advise you to visit a bakery rather than a supermarket.

Whole Foods sells Divina products, and I'm sure they would have the mini toasts. Harris Teeter also carries some specialty products, but I'm not certain whether they carry Divina products specifically.
