Question : How can I make a shiny, "gold/brass" finish figaro chain look vintaged or weathered/distressed?
I'm repairing a necklace and found the right size chain but could not find a distressed finish, only shiny. Can I soak it in vinegar or some other solution, or rub something on it, to give it a distressed look?
Answer:
Liver of sulphur (sold at art and jewelry stores) is used to create an oxidized look for sterling silver or copper. Gold and brass don't react as well. Antiquing varnish would work for them.

Unless the jewelry is antique or highly ornate, pawn shops, and Cash4Gold only buy based on a percentage of the weight (Ever hear the term "worth its weight in gold"?)At current prices gold is selling for $1,626 an ounce. It is most likely in the 12 gram range, which means it is .38 ounces of pure gold. However it is only 10k, which means it is less than half pure gold. So then you are at .19 ounces of pure gold. That means at current market value you have roughly 310 dollars worth of gold. If it is only plated however, the chain is basically considered "costume" jewelry... In that case you would be looking at maybe 50 or 60 dollars if a pawn shop will even take it at all.But then you also have to realize that pawn shops and gold shops have to make a profit. Usually they pay 50-60% of the value of the item. That would mean if it is real gold, you would get roughly 150 dollars for the chain.The cross would need a jeweler appraisal to determine its value. Gem stones range wildly in price based on factors such as size (how many carats) cut, clarity, and "fire" (its "sparkle"). The cross could be anywhere from 25 dollars to 10,000.

Question : Is it possible to have links taken out of figaro chains?
To shorten it a bit so it doesn't catch on things. How much will this cost? Not much use if they charge £10 to take a couple of links out a chain that cost £12.I mean to take it to a jewellers, not do it myself.

I've removed links from my own chains before, figaro and cable, so it is possible. A jeweler shouldn't charge that much to do it, its a fairly simple thing.
