I have a set of Peerless Cable Chains that I will put on my front tires. I plan on buying another set of Cable Chains manufactured by SCC to put on the back tires. I'm not sure if the link sizes are different. Does it matter?If I had cables in front and traditional chains on the back, does that matter?I will be driving under 30 mph and a short distance, just to 'get over the pass'.
Answer:
There is absolutely no problem. But make sure to put the same type of chains in one axle (same type on left and right front - same type on left and right back). Make sure to drive slowly with chains because you can harm your car. You can even use snow blankets (shelled in EU) in front and regular chains on back.

I use cables, specifically the diagonal ones called Z chains (at NAPA). They supposedly can be put on without lifting the tire or moving the car but I have never found that to be true.

Sport Chalet! They take you to the limit!When I bought my chains there, they had a good selection. You might also check around some tire stores near the mountains. They may carry chains. Pep Boys might be good.

Question : Can I place 205/60r16 tire cable/chains on my 205/60r15 rims?
It's snowing like a bear outside right now, and I don't have any at all... a friend has the r16 version of tire/cable chains. Will they fit? or am I done for?

No. And your rim isn't measured that way, only a tire that fits on it is measured xxx/xxR15. Rims are measured by the diameter (the "15" part) and the number of inches across (ex: 7.5). You can further add the stud offset the wheel fits on (ex: 5X125mm).But what you're asking is if you can place your tire cable/chains fitted for a 16 inch tire onto a 15 inch tire which measures the same in the cross measurement and sidewall measurement. The answer is no, because the 15 inch rim/tire is going to have a diameter of 1 inch less than the 16 inch rim/tire and the chains were fitted for a diameter of a 16 inch tire with the sidewall measurement of 60 and a cross measurement of 205. If you get a tire that's wider and with a bigger sidewall for your 15 inch rims, perhaps you could obtain the same overall distance in all three measurements to make the chains fit on the 15 inch rims, but I'm not researching and getting into all the needed measurements of that. It is, however, a plausible option for you. I suppose it may be more economical for you to simply purchase new chains for the 15's.

Question : how to put on snow cable/chains?
I'm going to big bear tomorrow and chains are required on the freeway i'll be on... whenever i've been to the snow before i've been with someone who put them on without my help... and this time i'll be going with someone who is worse in this dept. than i think i am... since I will probably have to be the one putting them on, does anyone have any tricks or tips for putting snow cables or chains on for a total beginner?

The short answer is... Put them on the ground in front of the wheels, and drive onto them, then wrap each around the wheel, and add the adjusters / tensioners to make sure it's secure. That's about it, really.

Chains may be rougher on the tires but they will get you up a hill where cables won't (take them off on dry pavement)

Question : Can you repair frayed/ broken cable-style tire chains?
I took my cable style tire chains off today and observed that the leads on a both chains were either frayed or broken near the end. This is the loose stuff that sticks out when you put the chains on. Can this be repaired?

if they are made of cable and not actually chain then you need to replace them they are junk......and no they cannot be repaired...
