Answer:
The short answer is... Put them on the ground in front of the wheels, and drive onto them, then wrap each around the wheel, and add the adjusters / tensioners to make sure it's secure. That's about it, really.

I live where i have to go up a lot of hills and down hills to get to where i need to go with only 2 wheel driver so i need to figure out which is the best to go with to get me places safely.

Chains may be rougher on the tires but they will get you up a hill where cables won't (take them off on dry pavement)

I use cables, specifically the diagonal ones called Z chains (at NAPA). They supposedly can be put on without lifting the tire or moving the car but I have never found that to be true.

I was about to see if any of my old cable chains fit the tires on my Ford Focus, since it snowed a foot last night. In an unusual turn of events I happened to read the owners manual and they clearly say not to use chains or cables as it may damage the car. Why Not? Do people do it anyway? If so, do you put them on the front or rear wheels?

they will damage , I once had a set that a small piece came off and rapped around the brake line and then of course I had no brakes, If you dare though you would install them on the front since you have a front wheel drive car, but I lived in Tahoe and Alaska and only owned rear wheel drive vehicles, and never had any problems or needed a tow, your car will work well in plowed streets it will become high centered if you go through packed snow that is a foot deep but otherwise I would pass on the chains, the only reason I had chains installed that one time was because the California highway patrol would not let me drive through the Donner pass on I-80

Here is the thing people don't know about tire chains. They don't help you corner better, they don't help you come to a stop in shorter distance. All they are good for is getting your car moving. Put chains on the wheels that provide power. They are useless on other wheels.
