Does a thick galvanized chain and padlock bicycle lock system protect your bike better than a thick aircraft cable lock system (in NYC)?
Answer:
Galvanizing is simply a finish and doesn't add strength to a chain. If you want to use a chain get one that is CASE HARDENED and plated.Generally, a braided cable with kevlar core is going to be your best protection since bolt cutters can't easily negotiate the stuff but both cables and chains have the same issue- the ends and the padlock. These are the most compromised part of any flexible lock.If I HAD to choose between the cable and hardened chain it would probably be the cable- at least 8mm in diameter.

Question : I am having trouble getting cable chains properly installed on my Honda CRV?
They go on OK but on my test-drive they are banging on something. I have inspected them and can find nothing. I have taken them off and on 3 times.Do you have any suggestions?Can I put them on the back even though this is an all wheel drive car?

if they banging you have anything left hanging lose like the end of you need to tie them down tighter and yes put them on back would drive better really ive never had the need to use them knowing that they will beat your car more than a good snow tire or studed snow tire sounds like they just not tight here a how to and a video of how to do it

I'm going to big bear tomorrow and chains are required on the freeway i'll be on... whenever i've been to the snow before i've been with someone who put them on without my help... and this time i'll be going with someone who is worse in this dept. than i think i am... since I will probably have to be the one putting them on, does anyone have any tricks or tips for putting snow cables or chains on for a total beginner?

The short answer is... Put them on the ground in front of the wheels, and drive onto them, then wrap each around the wheel, and add the adjusters / tensioners to make sure it's secure. That's about it, really.

I use cables, specifically the diagonal ones called Z chains (at NAPA). They supposedly can be put on without lifting the tire or moving the car but I have never found that to be true.

Question : Can I place 205/60r16 tire cable/chains on my 205/60r15 rims?
It's snowing like a bear outside right now, and I don't have any at all... a friend has the r16 version of tire/cable chains. Will they fit? or am I done for?
Answer:
No. And your rim isn't measured that way, only a tire that fits on it is measured xxx/xxR15. Rims are measured by the diameter (the "15" part) and the number of inches across (ex: 7.5). You can further add the stud offset the wheel fits on (ex: 5X125mm).But what you're asking is if you can place your tire cable/chains fitted for a 16 inch tire onto a 15 inch tire which measures the same in the cross measurement and sidewall measurement. The answer is no, because the 15 inch rim/tire is going to have a diameter of 1 inch less than the 16 inch rim/tire and the chains were fitted for a diameter of a 16 inch tire with the sidewall measurement of 60 and a cross measurement of 205. If you get a tire that's wider and with a bigger sidewall for your 15 inch rims, perhaps you could obtain the same overall distance in all three measurements to make the chains fit on the 15 inch rims, but I'm not researching and getting into all the needed measurements of that. It is, however, a plausible option for you. I suppose it may be more economical for you to simply purchase new chains for the 15's.
