Question : how to put on snow cable/chains?
I'm going to big bear tomorrow and chains are required on the freeway i'll be on... whenever i've been to the snow before i've been with someone who put them on without my help... and this time i'll be going with someone who is worse in this dept. than i think i am... since I will probably have to be the one putting them on, does anyone have any tricks or tips for putting snow cables or chains on for a total beginner?

The short answer is... Put them on the ground in front of the wheels, and drive onto them, then wrap each around the wheel, and add the adjusters / tensioners to make sure it's secure. That's about it, really.

Galvanizing is simply a finish and doesn't add strength to a chain. If you want to use a chain get one that is CASE HARDENED and plated.Generally, a braided cable with kevlar core is going to be your best protection since bolt cutters can't easily negotiate the stuff but both cables and chains have the same issue- the ends and the padlock. These are the most compromised part of any flexible lock.If I HAD to choose between the cable and hardened chain it would probably be the cable- at least 8mm in diameter.

Most tire places dont sell chain chains anymore. For small passenger cars, chain chains are not good. Oftentimes they will break, either from going too fast on them (30mph is usually the top speed you should go), or from improper installation. When they break, they may hit your wheel well, fender, or side panel. They are also pretty hard on tires so if you have a good car, you should avoid chain chains.Cable chains work fine and are easier to install. Make sure you get them to fit your tires. If you're unsure how to install them, you should practice on dry land first before having to do them for the first time in the snow on the side of the freeway. Or, you can pay one of the approved Caltrans installers to put them on for you. Should cost around $20. They will be there if there's chain control.

They go on OK but on my test-drive they are banging on something. I have inspected them and can find nothing. I have taken them off and on 3 times.Do you have any suggestions?Can I put them on the back even though this is an all wheel drive car?

if they banging you have anything left hanging lose like the end of you need to tie them down tighter and yes put them on back would drive better really ive never had the need to use them knowing that they will beat your car more than a good snow tire or studed snow tire sounds like they just not tight here a how to and a video of how to do it

I use cables, specifically the diagonal ones called Z chains (at NAPA). They supposedly can be put on without lifting the tire or moving the car but I have never found that to be true.
