Questions & Answers
Question : A skipper on a boat notices wave crests passing his anchor chain every 5 seconds. ?
He estimates the distance between wave crest to be 15 meters. He also correctly estimates the speed of the waves. What is the speed?
Answer:
The wave equation isvelocity = wavelength x frequency.The wavelength is 15 m and the frequency is 1 / 5 s, so the velocity is 3 m/s.

Question : What size and type anchor for a 20' pontoon boat located on a lake with many bottom obstructions?
The mushroom anchors I have just don't seem to do the trick in windy conditions. Also what is the rule of thumb for how much anchor line to use? What type of anchors require a chain?Boat weighs around 3000lbs. Winds on the lake can be from 8 to 22mph in my recent outings.
Answer:
Still nothing beats a standard Danforth anchor for hold on most varieties of bottoms. You can use a modified version in 7 lbs. Typical line is a combo of chain and rope. The chain should be at least the length of the boat and I'd carry at least 100' of 3/8" rope tied to the chain. For windy conditions you should be using a minimum of 5 to 1 scope. That means in windy conditions you'd have just enough rode for 20' depth of water with 5 to 1 scope on the lake and not have to worry about breaking anchorage.

Question : I have a 29ft displacement launch. What diameter of anchor chain do I need. And what diameter of anchor rope?
I have a 29ft displacement launch. What diameter of anchor chain do I need. And what diameter of anchor rope?
Answer:
The anchor line. All of the gear, taken collectively, that lies between a boat and it's anchor is called the rode -- whether it be synthetic fiber, chain or a combination of the two.Twisted nylon.Nylon, in three-strand twist or double-braid form, is now by far the most widely used material for anchor lines. For anchoring, perhaps nylon's greatest asset is it's elasticity; nylon stretches a third or more under load. It's working elasticity is 15 to 25 percent, which is of particular value when a boat surges at anchor in steep seas. In such conditions there is a heavy shock load on fittings and ground tackle -- unless provision is made to absorb it gradually. Nylon's elasticity does exactly that. Some boaters unwittingly lose part or most of the advantages inherent in nylon by using too large a line. Within the limits of safe working loads, the smaller the diameter the better the elasticity for given conditions. A practical limit is reached when small diameters (though rated high enough for breaking strength) are not convenient to handle. Some experienced boaters use nylon as light as 3/8-inch diameter on working anchors of 30- to 40-foot craft. ...nylon line is highly resistant to rot, decay and mildew, but can be damaged by rust from iron fittings or chain.Chain.The three kinds of chain most used as anchor rode are "BBB", "Proof Coil" and "High Test." Chain is designated by diameter of the material in the link, but the links of the various types differ slightly in length. It is necessary to match the chain to the wildcat (a pulley designed for use with chain) of the anchor windlass; the differences in link length are slight, but enough to cause trouble if there is a mismatch.BBB is marginally stronger than Proof Coil; High Test is significantly stronger than either. The selection of specfic chain type and size for your boat involves several factors, the first of which is adequate strength. A safe standard to use is a working load figured from the size of the boat and the conditions to be encountered -- at 20 percent of the chain's breaking strength when new. But you must consider weight. The chain must be heavy enough to provide a proper sag to cushion shock loads, but the length required for normal anchoring depths must not be so heavy, when stored on board, that it affects the boat's handling characteristics or even it's safety.Nylon-and-chain.Today the ideal rode is a combination of nylon line and a short length of chain -- 6 to 8 feet or longer is desirable -- between the line and the anchor. One effect of chain in this combination rode is to lower the angle of pull, because chain tends to lie on the bottom. Of equal or even greater significance is the fact that today's lightweight anchors often bury completely, taking part of the rode with them...Chain used in this way may vary from 1/4-inch diameter for 20-footers up to 7/16-inch for 50-footers.Chain should be galvanized to protect against rust..........................................................................................For a 29 ft. boat: Rode Length -- 200 ft.Rode Size ----- 7/16 inchesChain Size* --- 5/16 inchesStorm Anchors model no.Danforth 22-SFortress FX-11Plow (lbs.) 25Bruce (lbs.) 16.5Delta (lbs.) 22* Recommended chain length: 1/2 foot of chain for each foot of boat length. Question : why are boat anchors and chains galvanised with zinc but their engines have a sacrificial zinc block?
why are boat anchors and chains galvanised with zinc but their engines have a sacrificial zinc block?
Answer:
Zinc has a higher galvanic potential than iron or steel, the underlying strength materials of both the chain and the engine. As a consequence when there is galvanic action, and a current is created between two dissimilar metals, like zinc and iron, and through water, the zinc is the metal that loses its electrons to form the current. And as it loses the electrons, it disintegrates, while the lower, more noble metal, e.g., the iron remains intact. [See source.]The chains are galvanized, coated with a zinc blend, rather than using a single zinc bar because the length of the chain means the bar would have little effect over most of the iron/steel chain. On the other hand, the engine is comparatively compact and the zinc bar can lose its electrons and save the engine frame that is not far away.

Question : How bout a tatoo of a different kind of anchor on each calf with chain leading up legs, splicing to rope, th?
then both going up the back making a square know out of eachother, down each arm underneath where one makes a monkeyfist and the other an eye splic and the rope around the wrist. Maybe some colorful fish swimming around the anchors.... I have no tatoos and this would be a long work in progress.
Answer:
wow. that is a huge tattoo commitment and if you are willing to make that commitment then congratulations to you!! since you don't have any tattoos yet, let me give you this advice.research artists before you go to someone. don't just walk into any local tattoo shop and get someone to start this for you. look at as many portfolios as you can get your hands on. find a reputable artist that does wonderful original work. preferably someone that specializes in traditional style tattoos with maybe a bit of a new skool touch. if you live anywhere near texas, my tattoo artist is phenomenal. good luck!!

Question : How do you anchor a tractor to a flatbed?
How do you anchor a tractor or skid steer to a flatbed trailer? Using those ratchet straps, or chains.
Answer:
Tractors (and other things with wheels) need to be secured VERY well. I recommend the use of chains and binders instead of straps for loads of over 2,000 pounds. And make sure the chains are of sufficient strength for the weight of the tractor being carried. And the binders must be TIGHT. Tires bounce, and this results in chains getting tighter and loser as the tires flex under road conditions. A lose chain can result in a chain breaking. Loads should be "stretched" from front to back. Depending on the size and weight of the tractor, it must have at least 2 chains (one in front, and one in back) pulling against each other. Larger tractors should have one chain for each tire. Question : How to tie my anchor line to the right length?
I have a raft. On the front of it is an anchor ring. To that I have attached my 75' anchor line then to a 4 foot anchor chain then to my anchor. That setup is for deeper water. But what knot do I use to shorten the line for shallower water? I don't have a "cleat" on the boat, just an anchor ring. I would assume that entails tying a secondary knot at a shorter distance on the line to the ring on the raft.
Answer:
i would start by splicing the end of your rope onto the anchor ring so if any of your knots come undone you will not loose your anchor. If you cannot splice tie a bowline (i heard it refered to as a Bowman's knot the other day on American tv show) and leave enough tail(6 inches or about 150mm) to feed through the main part of your rope. eg after tying the knot open one of the strands of your rope, (before the knot) and feed your tail through it, repeat about 40 mm or 1" down the rope. This way your knot will never come undone. As for the knot to shorten rope probably a round turn with two half hitches, simple knot that will not pull tight. You should find how to do the knot on the web fairly easily, very common knot for tying boat up. All the best.

Question : What does attaching an anchor and chain to your heavy bag do to your workout? Does it give u a harder workout?
What does attaching an anchor and chain to your heavy bag do to your workout? Does it give u a harder workout?
Answer:
The D ring on the bottom of the bag, allows the use of the weighted sand base and bungee to keep the bag from swinging and more stationary. Some like to work the bag being in close and working the body, therefore the wight, while others WANT it to swing around so they can sidestep it and catch it as it goes by again and again. Two different styles for two different types of opponents.
