Questions & Answers
Question : How to tie my anchor line to the right length?
I have a raft. On the front of it is an anchor ring. To that I have attached my 75' anchor line then to a 4 foot anchor chain then to my anchor. That setup is for deeper water. But what knot do I use to shorten the line for shallower water? I don't have a "cleat" on the boat, just an anchor ring. I would assume that entails tying a secondary knot at a shorter distance on the line to the ring on the raft.
Answer:
i would start by splicing the end of your rope onto the anchor ring so if any of your knots come undone you will not loose your anchor. If you cannot splice tie a bowline (i heard it refered to as a Bowman's knot the other day on American tv show) and leave enough tail(6 inches or about 150mm) to feed through the main part of your rope. eg after tying the knot open one of the strands of your rope, (before the knot) and feed your tail through it, repeat about 40 mm or 1" down the rope. This way your knot will never come undone. As for the knot to shorten rope probably a round turn with two half hitches, simple knot that will not pull tight. You should find how to do the knot on the web fairly easily, very common knot for tying boat up. All the best.

Question : Is it bad practice to use just one locking biner to set up a top rope anchor?
If the anchor is chains affixed to bolts, is it bad to climb/belay off of just one locking biner clipped thru the chains? Some guy flipped out on me that I didn't use more than one biner, but I don't see it as a big deal being a top rope. Was I really in the wrong?
Answer:
Technically, you should be as redundant as possible when dealing with anchors, and that includes the 'biners. Also, it puts a little less stress and wear on your rope if you have it running through two as opposed to one. All that being said, the chances of a carabiner failing while top roping off bolted anchors are very slim (provided it's not a piece of junk).

Question : how much does one link of anchor chain form a aircraft carrier weigh?
how much does one link of anchor chain form a aircraft carrier weigh?
Answer:
On Forrestal-class carriers, each link of the anchor chain weighs 360 pounds.

Question : Calculus Question: How do I find the work done by raising an anchor up?
An anchor weighing 100 lb in water is attached to a chain weighing 5 lb/ft in water. Find the work done to haul the anchor and chain to the surface of the water from a depth of 25 ft.
Answer:
Let x be the length of the chain that has been pulled in, and let W be the combined weight of the anchor and chain overboard.W = 100 + 5(25 - x)W = 225 - 5xNow integrate that expression with respect to x from 0 to 25. The result will be the work in foot-pounds.

Question : What does attaching an anchor and chain to your heavy bag do to your workout? Does it give u a harder workout?
What does attaching an anchor and chain to your heavy bag do to your workout? Does it give u a harder workout?
Answer:
The D ring on the bottom of the bag, allows the use of the weighted sand base and bungee to keep the bag from swinging and more stationary. Some like to work the bag being in close and working the body, therefore the wight, while others WANT it to swing around so they can sidestep it and catch it as it goes by again and again. Two different styles for two different types of opponents.

Question : How long is the longest anchor chain?
Of a cruise ship, or oil tanker, or cargo ship, whichever :)Or, what is the deepest a ship has ever laid anchor?Cheers
Answer:
Few ships carry more than 300 ft. of anchor chain. A few drilling rigs and research vessels some times carry mush more, and there are fixed moorings that have a buoy that the boat or ship can use. I don't know the longest ever, but most ships that need more than a few hundred feet now use thrusters that keep it ship or drilling rig in position. Of the types of ship you listed, I would think an oil tanker would carry more than say a Cruise Ship, or Cargo ship, but none would need anything like a Battleship or Aircraft Carrier. Keep in mind that the size of the ship (weight) requires that the "scope" of the mooring chain would need to be 5 to 7 times the depth of the water where the ship is going to anchor. So, a huge ship like an aircraft carrier which was going the anchor in 200 ft. of water would need (and carry) between 1000' and 1400' of chain. However, Modern day cruise ships and cargo ships normally anchor in bays and estuary's in about 60-80 ft. of water So they are equipped for that.Drilling rigs (there are several types) often operate in waters from as little as 50' deep to several hundred feet deep. The rig in the Gulf was drilling at almost 2000 ft when an explosion occurred, that resulted in the huge oil spill. It was held in position by thrusters. Something like a big outboard motor (Bigger than a small truck). In fact usually several 4 to 6 of them. Even the drilling rigs moored in the North Sea use cables not Anchor chain.

Question : How do you anchor a tractor to a flatbed?
How do you anchor a tractor or skid steer to a flatbed trailer? Using those ratchet straps, or chains.
Answer:
Tractors (and other things with wheels) need to be secured VERY well. I recommend the use of chains and binders instead of straps for loads of over 2,000 pounds. And make sure the chains are of sufficient strength for the weight of the tractor being carried. And the binders must be TIGHT. Tires bounce, and this results in chains getting tighter and loser as the tires flex under road conditions. A lose chain can result in a chain breaking. Loads should be "stretched" from front to back. Depending on the size and weight of the tractor, it must have at least 2 chains (one in front, and one in back) pulling against each other. Larger tractors should have one chain for each tire. Question : What size and type anchor for a 20' pontoon boat located on a lake with many bottom obstructions?
The mushroom anchors I have just don't seem to do the trick in windy conditions. Also what is the rule of thumb for how much anchor line to use? What type of anchors require a chain?Boat weighs around 3000lbs. Winds on the lake can be from 8 to 22mph in my recent outings.
Answer:
Still nothing beats a standard Danforth anchor for hold on most varieties of bottoms. You can use a modified version in 7 lbs. Typical line is a combo of chain and rope. The chain should be at least the length of the boat and I'd carry at least 100' of 3/8" rope tied to the chain. For windy conditions you should be using a minimum of 5 to 1 scope. That means in windy conditions you'd have just enough rode for 20' depth of water with 5 to 1 scope on the lake and not have to worry about breaking anchorage.
