Questions & Answers
Question : why are boat anchors and chains galvanised with zinc but their engines have a sacrificial zinc block?
why are boat anchors and chains galvanised with zinc but their engines have a sacrificial zinc block?

Answer:
Zinc has a higher galvanic potential than iron or steel, the underlying strength materials of both the chain and the engine. As a consequence when there is galvanic action, and a current is created between two dissimilar metals, like zinc and iron, and through water, the zinc is the metal that loses its electrons to form the current. And as it loses the electrons, it disintegrates, while the lower, more noble metal, e.g., the iron remains intact. [See source.]The chains are galvanized, coated with a zinc blend, rather than using a single zinc bar because the length of the chain means the bar would have little effect over most of the iron/steel chain. On the other hand, the engine is comparatively compact and the zinc bar can lose its electrons and save the engine frame that is not far away.

Question : how much does one link of anchor chain form a aircraft carrier weigh?
how much does one link of anchor chain form a aircraft carrier weigh?

Answer:
On Forrestal-class carriers, each link of the anchor chain weighs 360 pounds.

Question : How is the downward force of a boat's anchor chain affected by its weight and length?
If I reduce the weight of my anchor chain, but increase the length of chain that rests on the seabed, can I create the same downward force needed to prevent the anchor being pulled up?

Answer:
Played out anchor chain on the ocean bed does nothing but give the boat/ship slack to float about a greater area on the surface. The dragging chain on the bed hinders that surface trek in the wind and currents so the movement about under the weather is slower than it would otherwise be.The weight of the anchor/chain combination, your downward force, is a net weight. The anchor weight W = Mg and the chain weight w = rho LA; where rho is the chain's density, L is its length dangling in the water, and A is its cross sectional area. Total weight in the water, but not lying on the bed, is W + w.That weight is offset by the buoyancy of the anchor/chain combination. Let Rho = the water density, V = the anchor volume, and v = LA be the chain volume dangling in the water. Buoyancy is then B = Rho(V + LA) whenever the anchor and chain are not lying on the bed or b = RhoLA when the anchor is on the bed and L is the length of dangling chain. The net force on the dangling anchor and chain is F = W - B = (Mg + rhoLA) - Rho(V + LA) = (W - RhoV) + LA(rho - Rho). As you can plainly see, there is more downward force when the weight of the anchor W is greater. Same for the dangling chain of length L, when its weight is greater, there is more net downward force. As w = rhoLA, this means more dangling chain would yield more downward net force. But, and this is a big BUT, the downward force occurs only with the anchor and chain when they are dangling off the bed. Once they reach the bed, the equal but opposite force of the bed acting on the weights of the chain and anchor neutralize and the net weight is zero.Anchors keep ships and boats from moving mainly by digging into the bed; thereby attaching the boats and ships to the lake/ocean floor. That's why many, if not most, anchors have flukes with points...to anchor (thus the term) the boat to the ocean/lake bottom.

Question : what do the links on the anchor chain weigh on the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier. Thanks, -Dano?
I also would like to know what the anchor weighs too.

Answer:
the links weigh about 365 lbs and the anchor weighs about 30 tons...

Question : How to tie my anchor line to the right length?
I have a raft. On the front of it is an anchor ring. To that I have attached my 75' anchor line then to a 4 foot anchor chain then to my anchor. That setup is for deeper water. But what knot do I use to shorten the line for shallower water? I don't have a "cleat" on the boat, just an anchor ring. I would assume that entails tying a secondary knot at a shorter distance on the line to the ring on the raft.

Answer:
i would start by splicing the end of your rope onto the anchor ring so if any of your knots come undone you will not loose your anchor. If you cannot splice tie a bowline (i heard it refered to as a Bowman's knot the other day on American tv show) and leave enough tail(6 inches or about 150mm) to feed through the main part of your rope. eg after tying the knot open one of the strands of your rope, (before the knot) and feed your tail through it, repeat about 40 mm or 1" down the rope. This way your knot will never come undone. As for the knot to shorten rope probably a round turn with two half hitches, simple knot that will not pull tight. You should find how to do the knot on the web fairly easily, very common knot for tying boat up. All the best.

What does anchor and chain tattoo around the arm mean?

Answer:
Anchor usually stands for a nautical career or hobby. A chain usually stands for being held back, or imprisoned.

Question : How much dose a link of chain weight that holds the anchor on a battle ship?
How much dose a link of chain weight that holds the anchor on a battle ship?

Answer:
350lbs each is what I remember from a show on the history of battle ships.

Question : shackle length of anchor chain?
what is the lenght between two shackles of anchor chain?

Answer:
12 inches or/and one foot

Question : What does attaching an anchor and chain to your heavy bag do to your workout? Does it give u a harder workout?
What does attaching an anchor and chain to your heavy bag do to your workout? Does it give u a harder workout?

Answer:
The D ring on the bottom of the bag, allows the use of the weighted sand base and bungee to keep the bag from swinging and more stationary. Some like to work the bag being in close and working the body, therefore the wight, while others WANT it to swing around so they can sidestep it and catch it as it goes by again and again. Two different styles for two different types of opponents.

Question : How do you anchor a tractor to a flatbed?
How do you anchor a tractor or skid steer to a flatbed trailer? Using those ratchet straps, or chains.

Answer:
Tractors (and other things with wheels) need to be secured VERY well. I recommend the use of chains and binders instead of straps for loads of over 2,000 pounds. And make sure the chains are of sufficient strength for the weight of the tractor being carried. And the binders must be TIGHT. Tires bounce, and this results in chains getting tighter and loser as the tires flex under road conditions. A lose chain can result in a chain breaking. Loads should be "stretched" from front to back. Depending on the size and weight of the tractor, it must have at least 2 chains (one in front, and one in back) pulling against each other. Larger tractors should have one chain for each tire.
