Question : What would you call me and my girl's style?
Me and my gf, since we are the same size, share the same clothing. My hair is mid back length, black-brown, frizzy and curly. Hers is in shoulder length black dreads. Neither of us wear makeup. Question : How do I identify my lesbian label? Am I femme, stemme, stud, or something else?
I have a question for the lesbians. We have a lot of labels to try to describe, in only one word, a woman's appearance and personality as it relates to gender. Often I'll be asked which one I am, but the problem is I don't know. I'm a girly girl when I feel like it, and and kind of a tomboy when I feel like it. A.) {Concluding I'm not a femme} I don't wear mini-skirts or high heels, have a fake tan, or wear a lot of make-up, or always have my nails done. I rarely dress proactively or sexy, preferring a more modest and innocent showing of femininity. Because I don't posses these traits I assume I'm not a femme. B.) {Concluding I'm not a butch or stud} I will, however, wear a skirt or dress on rare occasion, have my nails done, and wear make-up when it appeals to me, and wear earrings and my long hair styled on days that I feel like it. It only really appeals to me when there's something fun I plan on doing that day or if I'm out with friends though. I would never shop in the men's section. This means I'm certainly not a butch. C.) {Concluding I'm not a stemme} I enjoy girly jewelry, feminine tops, and colors and clothes I consider cute and feminine. Often though, I'll decide to be simple and just wear jeans, a simple shirt or tank top or sweater or long-sleeved shirt, and chuck taylors or something of the like. Because of my simple attire days, I considered the use of the word stemme, but that doesn't fit either. For example, I'm fine wearing my bikini without shorts over it, I don't mind tops that show off my shoulders, curves, or have lace and bows. And, the word wouldn't fit me on days that I do decide to femme it up a little. If someone caught me one day they might think I'm femme, and on another day they might think I'm stemme or androgynous. I'll wear a silky dress, make-up and do everything up womanly for a wedding one day, and yet wear a vest and a tie to a convention another day. I'll be a vampire victim in a lacy dress one Halloween, and a mutache wearing, tuck my hair in my hat, suspender-wearing detective another. If I ever decided to cut my hair into a pixie, which I thought would look cute, then they'd be even more off-base with their first impressions of me. Sometimes people will use what a women is attracted to in order to help decipher her label. This doesn't work for me as I like all kinds of girls. If ultra-femme (never goes a day without her make-up and nails done) is 1, on a scale of 1 to 10, and total butch (everyone mistakes as a man, doesn't shave) is a 10, then I like the 2 to 9 range. It's possible that because I'm young and have only been "out" just over a year, that there are some things I'm just not aware of yet. So my question is....what kind of label can I possibly use to identify myself that would satisfy that asker and be accurate as well?

Answer:
You sound too thoughtful to put yourself in some kind of arbitrary box. You sound absolutely fascinating, btw. As you said, you're changeable with some femme characteristics and some that are butch. That probably describes about 90% of women, gay or straight. I'm like almost totally femme, but I like baseball which is my one tomboy trait. If I were you, I would just celebrate myself as a gay woman who is hard to pin down (at least in a figurative sense). Let everyone else try to play with boxes.

Question : What would you label me (long)?
I'm having an argument with a friend on what most people would label me. We actually took bets. So, what do you think?Fashion sense: political symbolism (in order to invite conversations in which I could educate people), lots of rasta coloring and rainbows, red keffiyeh (yes, I know what it means), slouchy beanies, men's fedoras, hemp jewelry, patched up denim vests, peace signs, wooden jewelry, smiley faces, peasant skirts, hemp belts, recycled tire belts, plain bootcut jeans, band hoodies and t-shirts, hiking boots, hemp sandals, kitty ears, and traditional Mexican dresses.Piercings: two studs in each ear and one nostril piercingHair and makeup: hair is naturally black and cut into a pixie cut, while the makeup consists of vegan, paraben free, cruelty free black mascara; paraben-free concealer; vegan, lead free, cruelty free red lipstick.Sexuality and gender: bisexual and femaleBeliefs: Marxist, vegan, straight edge, atheist, feminist, pro-neurodiversity, pro-LGBTQ and environmentalist.Music: riotgrrrl, reggae, ska, dykecore, queercore, political punk in general, folk punk, folk rock, blues rock, acid rock, heavy metal, folk metal and hardcore punk.Activities: activism, poetry writing, hanging out with friends, listening to music, studying Marxism and feminism, jogging, lifting weights, yoga and knitting.
